Devil's Playground

Devil's Playground

When Amish teens turn 16, they have the opportunity to venture out in the "Devil's Playground" (the Amish's term for the outside world) and indulge in 21st century vices such as drinking and smoking. At the end of this period, called "Rumspringa," they can choose to commit to the church for good. Or not. This documentary tracks 18-year-old Faron's struggle to reconcile his drug addiction with his deeply ingrained desire to live the Amish life.

klara and edda belly dancing

The Klara and Edda belly-dancing Nan Goldin photo has been exhibited numerous times at major art shows without any controversy. The photo shown here has been blurred slightly to avoid all the Nan Goldin haters out there who claim the Klara and Edda picture is child porn.

Sorry, but it really is art. It may not be your idea of art, but Nan Goldin is a highly respected photographer and artist.

Numbered editions of the Klara and Edda belly-dancing by Nan Goldin print in a 30″ x 40″ size from Goldin’s The Devil’s Playground are highly sought after by collectors and sell for thousands of dollars at high-end auction houses like Sotheby’s.

2007 Daytime Emmy Award Winners

The 2007 Daytime Emmy Award Winners

I must confess, I am a soapaholic. I started out watching All My Children when I was younger because my mother watched it. From there, I quickly became addicted to other soaps as well - Guiding Light, The Young and the Restless, General Hospital, and One Life to Live. Many of my favorites are nominated from these shows.

My favorite show by far is Guiding Light. They are the winners in my book. They are celebrating 70 years in daytime, and got its start on radio in 1937!! Guiding Light had a whopping 17 nominations. Nominees from Guiding Light include CRYSTAL CHAPPELL (Olivia) and KIM ZIMMER (Reva) for Outstanding Lead Actress. (I predict Kim Zimmer as the WINNER for her incredible work in the cancer storyline). RICKY PAULL GOLDIN (Gus) for Outstanding Lead Actor (another predicted WINNER). GINA TOGNONI (Dinah) for Oustanding Supporting Actress (she won last year so it would be great for another win for her this year as well). TOM PELPHREY (Jonathan) for Outstanding Younger Actor (major shoo in for the second year in a row), and STEPHANIE GATSCHET (Tammy) for Outstanding Younger Actress (she’s up against some stiff competition). Guiding Light was also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series (which of course I hope they’ll win).

Check out everything you need to know about the Daytime Emmys and the nominees over at come-in-china.com. The show airs Friday night on CBS. You can bet I’ll be watching!!

Cabbage Soup Diet

Cabbage Soup Diet
The Cabbage Soup Diet is a 7 day meal plan, aimed at achieving fast weight loss. It is not a long-term weight loss solution, but is known to be effective over the short term. Apparently it originally came from a hospital (Sacred Hearts Hospital) to stimulate weight loss for surgery patients - but this cannot be verified.

Pros

  • Fast weight loss.
  • The change from some of our normally junky eating habits can be beneficial.
  • Vegetables from the Brassica family (such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) have been found to aid in preventing cancer.
  • Many say they enjoy eating the soup.

Cons

  • Some complain that the Cabbage Soup a little too bland.
  • Be prepared for gas...
  • Requires will power.
  • Lacks good nutrition
  • High in salt.
  • Not a long-term answer.

Hurricane Humberto closes schools, colleges in SW La.
Schools and colleges in at least two Louisiana parishes are closed today as Hurricane Humberto (oom-BEHR'-toh) crashed ashore in southeast Texas and moved east, dumping 5 to 10 inches of rain in southwest Louisiana.
Roger Erickson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Lake Charles, says the storm moved into Louisiana between 6 and 7 a.m. and sped up a bit, moving about 12 miles an hour with winds averaging 50 miles an hour. He says winds hit 80 miles an hour in isolated spots in Calcasieu and Beauregard parishes.
The rain -- which extends as far east as Baton Rouge -- hasn't caused any significant flooding, but the storm did knock down trees and cause power failures.

Coach Carter Soundtrack

Coach Carter Soundtrack

What is the perfect Soundtrack?
Given the wants and habits of novelist Nick Hornby’s characters (not to mention his own, as unlucky devotees of The New Yorker learned from Hornby's shoddy attempts at music criticism), you’d think a movie adaptation of one of his tales would be set to a rather carefully chosen soundtrack: a compendium of important songs from years past, each with a specific meaning and role. You’d think there’d be a lineage, a statement about pop culture and its influence on a certain generation of self-indulgent British men of the upper middle class. That there’d be a comfortable grounding in tradition. That the history of pop would keep us attuned to the development of the plot and maturity of the characters.
Yet in this case, you’d be wrong.
One of the most significantly novel contributions to the movie About A Boy -- a heart-stringer blessed with decent writing and the now-distinguishedly wrinkled who-me? glances of that ever-dashing cad, Hugh Grant -- is the original soundtrack and incidental music composed and performed by the Brit singer-songwriter with the coincidental name, Badly Drawn Boy (a.k.a. Damon Gough).
It’s innocent in that Mark Mothersbaugh-Royal Tenenbaums way via the childlike chimes of a celesta, mildly raw and therefore bittersweet on account of prickly acoustic guitar strumming, tuneful in a ’70s lite-rock method (perhaps to gel with the movie’s climactic set-piece featuring Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly”), and often above rhythms that jump the normal 4/4 pattern and instead shake things up in the middle of the bar with syncopations and unexpected twists. In all, an original set of movie tunes that does the one thing most movie tunes can’t: please listeners who choose to hear the album as exactly that -- an album.
Brilliant!, as a Hornby character might utter upon receiving a gift of hip new trainers. Of course writing movie music that works for its film is a virtue. But writing songs that live lives of their own after the flick hits the video store is quite another thing. One that often eludes even the most successful musicians. So why haven’t we heard of Damon Gough before?
Simple. Badly Drawn Boy is an indie artist (his strong 2000 debut is called The Hour of Bewilderbeast). The kind you catch at a downtown club around, say, midnight, when you’ve already had a few drinks and are not so much listening to the music as contemplating what and who the rest of your evening has in store. The kind you groove to without analysis. The kind that serves as the soundtrack to your life if you’re an urban person under 40 or so who still sees the pub or pool room as a part of your social life.
It may not be pop, but it’s certainly populist, and that’s why it strikes a chord with a story about people on the fringe who find solace in each other. When artists like Sting pen music for a film about human emotions, it has a sheen, a professional glow it cannot escape. And music like that is hard to connect to on a truly gut level. It’s always just out of reach, regardless of how moving it is.
Gough’s tunes -- some are purely instrumental and orchestrated in a symphonic way with nice, if not sappy use of strings and winds -- don’t try too hard. Like the alienated characters in Hornboy’s tale, they’re potent, worthwhile constructs that exist outside of a grand drama, and mesh with one another because they’ve nowhere else to go.
The album is sort of a chameleon: a smorgasbord of influences whose one constant is loneliness of Gough’s lyrics and John Lennon-like voice. “A Peak You Reach” is an upbeat bluesy riff that bounces along to lyrics like “I’m freezing cold,” “forcing answers into questions” and “I want you to know I know it’s not easy.” “Something to Talk About” is perhaps the album signature song: It’s used as the backdrop to Hugh Grant’s soliloquies about how if men are islands, he’s Ibiza; it lives on account of its bass-line -- a heartbeat that takes you back to the outsiderism of Fine Young Cannibals.
Other tracks sound like they paid attention to the famous VW Cabrio commercial accompanied by the Nick Drake song “Pink Moon”; Drake’s music is jazzy and folksy at once, while calming and morose at the same time. “Above You, Below Me” bops about like a Renaissance gigue. And though it’s been said too many times in the music press, “A Minor Incident,” is a really tight paean to Bob Dylan songwriting, acoustic reality and being brave.
Of course, the About a Boy soundtrack may not be the finest film music ever written. But it has a lot of heart, and a good handful of well-written songs by a guy who’s very unpopularity makes his work more successful -- on the surface and below. Which is enough for me to recommend it. The only question now is if Badly Drawn Boy will be able to maintain that indie appeal in the wake of the serious success that surely awaits him. Only a fistful of artists ever have.

Radio Frequencies Help Burn Salt Water

Radio Frequencies Help Burn Salt Water
An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the "most remarkable" water science discovery in a century.
John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn.
The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.
Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, has held demonstrations at his State College lab to confirm his own observations.
The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said.
The discovery is "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," Roy said.
"This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere," Roy said. "Seeing it burn gives me the chills."
Roy will meet this week with officials from the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense to try to obtain research funding.
The scientists want to find out whether the energy output from the burning hydrogen — which reached a heat of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit — would be enough to power a car or other heavy machinery.
"We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads," Roy said. "The potential is huge."

justin timberlake clothing lineRather than show the collection at the official Los Angeles Fashion Week site, Culver City's Smashbox Studios, Timberlake took over one of Hollywood's hottest nightspots on Tuesday night.
A runway and scores of bleacher seats were added to a section of Social Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard. Another part of the massive club was reserved for the exclusive after-party, including a performance by Timberlake, the 25-year old Grammy-winner whose second solo CD, "FutureSex/LoveSounds," was released in September.
The impressive guest list included Wilmer Valderrama, Eve and Timberlake's girlfriend, Cameron Diaz, who gave interviews and posed for pictures before taking their front-row seats. Other A-list attendees included Paris and Nicky Hilton, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and Patrick Dempsey, aka Dr. McDreamy from TV's "Grey's Anatomy."
When the show got started, David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" blared as models with their hair styled into pompadours and makeshift mohawks previewed the spring 2007 collection dubbed "Street Sexy." Britney Spears VMA Performance, Hit Or Miss?

Britney Spears'VMA Performance 2007Its official--Britney Spears is a lost cause. The MTV VMA’s are finally here and the big show is already under way. For the past few weeks there has been a lot of hype surrounding Spears’ supposed ‘comeback’ performance but let’s just say it was less than mediocre. She was wearing heels that she could barely walk in and her performance consisted of her going from one side of the stage to the other in a jeweled bra and panties lip-syncing. Several sources that had seen Spears’ rehearsals this week said she was great, but her performance during the show didn’t live up to the hype. It was obvious she was really nervous. Criss Angel was supposed to be on stage with Spears as well but he was barely walking across the red carpet during her performance. Hollyscoop was on the red carpet at the VMA’s and asked the stars if they thought Britney was going to make a comeback and everyone seemed to be really excited and supportive. Check out the video and tell us what you think about her performance.

The Bridges Of Madison County-The Bridges Of Madison County

The Bridges of Madison County
"The Bridges of Madison County" is not about love and not about sex, but about an idea. The film opens with the information that two people once met and fell in love, but decided not to spend the rest of their lives together. The implication is: If they had acted on their desire, they would not have deserved such a love.
Almost everybody knows the story by now. Robert James Waller's novel has been a huge best-seller. Its prose is not distinguished, but its story is compelling: He provides the fantasy of total eroticism within perfect virtue, elevating to a spiritual level the common fantasy in which a virile stranger materializes in the kitchen of a quiet housewife and takes her into his arms.
Waller's gift is to make the housewife feel virtuous afterward.
It is easy to analyze the mechanism, but more difficult to explain why this film is so deeply moving -- why Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep have made it into a wonderful movie love story, playing Robert and Francesca. We know, of course, that they will meet, fall in love and part forever. It is necessary that they part. If the story had ended "happily" with them running away together, no one would have read Waller's book and no movie would exist. The emotional peak of the movie is the renunciation, when Francesca does not open the door of her husband's truck and run to Robert. This moment, and not the moment when the characters first kiss, or make love, is the film's passionate climax.
When Eastwood announced that he had bought the novel and planned to direct and star in the movie, eyebrows were raised.
Readers had already cast it in their minds, and not with Eastwood -- or with Meryl Streep, for that matter. There is still a tendency to identify Eastwood with his cowboy and cop roles, and to forget that in recent years he has grown into one of the most creative forces in Hollywood, both as an actor and a director. He was taking a chance by casting himself as Robert Kincaid, but it pays off in a performance that is quiet, gentle and yet very masculine.
And Streep wonderfully embodies Francesca Johnson, the Italian woman who finds herself with a husband and children, living on a farm in the middle of a flat Iowa horizon. The two of them construct their performances not out of grand gestures, but out of countless subtle little moments of growing love; a time comes when they are solemn in the presence of the joy that has come to them.
Kincaid is a photographer for National Geographic, shooting a story on the covered bridges of the county. Francesca's husband and children have left home for several days to go to the Illinois State Fair. Photographer and housewife meet, and an awkward but friendly conversation leads to an offer of iced tea; then she shyly asks him to stay for dinner.
One of the story's mysteries is just when each of them becomes erotically aware of the other, and there is a moment, when he goes out to get beer from the car, and she pauses while preparing salad, when she not quite smiles to herself. She seems happy; there is a lift in her heart. In another scene, she answers the telephone and, standing behind him, adjusts his collar, brushes his neck with her finger, and then leaves her hand resting on his shoulder. Very quietly.
Eastwood and his cinematographer, Jack N. Green, find a wonderful play of light, shadow and candlelight in the key scenes across the kitchen table, with jazz and blues playing softly on a radio. They understand that Richard and Francesca are not falling in love with each other, exactly -- that takes time, when you are middle-aged -- but with the idea of their love, with what Richard calls "certainty." One of the sources of the movie's poignancy is that the flowering of the love will be forever deferred; they will know they are right for each other, and not follow up on their knowledge.
Robert wants her to leave with him. The notion is enormously attractive to her. Life on the farm is "not what I dreamed of when I was a girl." She envies his life of travel. Not understanding quite how tied she is to the land, he suggests her husband could take her "on a safari." Her smile shows what a wild idea that is. "What's he like?" Robert asks. "He's very clean," she replies. "Hard-working . . . gentle . . . a good father."
And he is. The story never makes the mistake of portraying Richard Johnson as a bad husband. But we have seen, in an early scene, that there is no conversation around the Johnson family dinner table. With Robert Kincaid, there is much conversation; they talk of their ideals, and she says, "But how can you live for just what you want?" And, quietly, "We are the choices that we have made, Robert." And they talk on, quoting Yeats, smoking Camels, dancing to the radio.
All of the scenes involving Eastwood and Streep find the right notes and shadings. The surrounding story -- involving Francesca's adult son and daughter finding her diaries and reading her story after her death -- is not as successful. I know this framing mechanism, added by writer Richard LaGravenese, is necessary; the whole emotional tone of the romance depends on it belonging to the lost past. And yet Annie Corley and Victor Slezak, as Caroline and Michael, never seem quite real, and Michael's shock at his mother's behavior, in particular, seems forced, like a story device. The payoff at the end -- as they reassess their own lives -- seems perfunctory.
But the central story glows. I've seen the movie twice now and was even more involved the second time, because I was able to pay more attention to the nuances of voice and gesture. Such a story could so easily be vulgarized, could be reduced to obvious elements of seduction, sex and melodramatic parting. Streep and Eastwood weave a spell, and it is based on that particular knowledge of love and self that comes with middle age. Younger characters might have run off together. Older ones might not have dared to declare themselves.
"The Bridges of Madison County" is about two people who find the promise of perfect personal happiness, and understand, with sadness and acceptance, that the most important things in life are not always about making yourself happy.

The Princess and the Marine

The Princess and the Marine

Television movie based on the true story of Meriam Al-Khalifa, a princess from Bahrain, who snuck into the United States illegally after eloping with Jason Johnson, a U.S. Marine, against her family's wishes.
On November 1, 1999, 19-year-old Meriam Al-Khalifa, a member of the Bahraini royal family, sneaked out of her family's mansion to meet her beloved -- 25-year-old U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Jason Johnson. Johnson gave her a forged military I.D. and fake orders along with baggy men's clothing. She hid her long, dark hair under a New York Yankee baseball cap and together the couple boarded a commercial flight to the United States. The lovers, who had met nearly a year before at a Bahrain shopping mall and had exchanged hundreds of love letters and one kiss during their courtship, got as far as Chicago -- where Al-Khalifa was taken into custody and forced to spend three days in jail. She was released after announcing her intention to seek asylum, and the couple quickly eloped to Las Vegas. For helping Al-Khalifa enter the country falsely, Johnson was court-martialed and demoted. The Princess and the Marine

Meriam Al-Khalifa

Meriam al Khalifa
Meriam al-Khalifa is a relative of Sheik Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, the King of Bahrain. She became famous after she met a US Marine and eloped with him to the United States. Her story was celebrated in the media – she was featured in highly popular TV shows such as Oprah, a movie about her aired on TV.
Family background
Meriam al-Khalifa is the daughter of Sheik Abdullah bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, a relative of King Sheik Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa of Bahrain.
Rise to fame
She acquired notoriety in 1999 after she met Jason Johnson, a United States Marine and a Mormon, in a shopping mall in Bahrain and fell in love with him. She escaped to the United States in November 1999 using forged documents and abandoned her life as a Bahraini royal, opting to marry Johnson and live as a housewife in Nevada. Johnson was court-martialed for his actions, and discharged from the Marine Corps.
Application for asylum in the US
Al-Khalifa faced charges of illegally entering the United States and deportation proceedings. The princess applied for political asylum, citing that she faced harm, which would have included death for her marriage to a non-Muslim and her exit from the country, which caused embarrassment to the royal family. Johnson and Al-Khalifa said in an interview with CBS News (see image at right) that if she returned to Bahrain, she would be "lashed, executed, stoned, killed, shot" [1]. He later also told the press that there was constant tension with her family, and at one point the FBI told him they had intercepted a Syrian national who said he'd been paid $500,000 to assassinate her.

Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel

The Wave Adaptive Modular VesselThe Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel
A wave adaptive modular vessel, sometimes seen in print listed as a WAM-V, is a unique type of ocean going vessel. A prototype wave adaptive modular vessel was showcased in the San Francisco Bay on 18 January 2007, to demonstrate the capabilities and potential uses for the vessel in a controlled environment. The company which developed the prototype, Marine Advanced Research, believes that it marks the start of a new era for marine technology.
The double hulled design for the wave adaptive modular vessel is very similar to that of a catamaran. The basic design consists of two floating pontoons, each with a separate engine, attached to each other and a central command deck with four flexible legs. The command deck is detachable, and can be separated from the parent vessel for quick trips, running on its own power. The legs include titanium springs and bearings which allow them to bend and flex with the movement of the ocean. The design resembles a sort of primitive spider, and appears to dance across the water, rather than cutting through it.
The designers of the wave adaptive modular vessel believe that it is more efficient than other boating methods. The vessel rests on top of the water instead of forcing its way through, and the unique design allows it to move with the waves, leaving a minimal wake behind. The wave adaptive modular vessel also has a very shallow draft, because it sits on top of the water, making it ideal for shallow lagoons and similar applications.
Environmentally, using a wave adaptive modular vessel makes a great deal of sense. The shallow wake left behind ensures that the vessel does not disturb the water as much as other large boats. In addition, a wave adaptive modular vessel is highly fuel efficient because of its very lightweight and innovative design. Minimal anchorage is needed, which reduces damage to the ocean floor. People with environmental concerns can use a wave adaptive modular vessel, and scientists can also take advantage of them for low-impact research.
A full sized wave adaptive modular vessel is fully capable of being used on the open ocean, raising a range of possibilities for use of the technology. A wave adaptive modular vessel can be used for military applications like surveillance and rapid deployment of troops and supplies, but it could also be used for scientific surveys, SCUBA diving, or passenger transport. It is also easy to learn how to use a wave adaptive modular vessel: even inexperienced sailors can pick up the skill readily.

Hybrid Technologies L1X-75: Zero-60 in 3.1 Seconds, Batteries Included
NEW YORK — Perhaps it was fate: We were walking toward the parking lot to leave the New York auto show’s second day of press previews on Thursday as a strong gust of wind blew the cover off of a little, red roadster parked on a side street. We went back to investigate, and discovered the L1X-75, a 600-hp, carbon-fiber rocket that’s powered by nothing more than your 110 outlet.
Sure, the speedster has none of the creature comforts of its Javits Center brethren (you know, airbags, radio, rear-view mirrors, turn signals), but what it lacks in style it makes up for in function. Hybrid Technologies’ thoroughbred pulls from zero to 60 in just 3.1 seconds as it launches to a top speed of 175 mph and a maximum range of around 200 miles (read about - and watch - our test drive of Hybrid's electric Mini Cooper S). Forget about our impending deadlines, our editors sending frantic Blackberry text messages that were overdue in the office. We had to take a test drive (watch video here; story continues below):Hybrid Technologies L1X-75: Zero-60 in 3.1 Seconds, Batteries Included

Though Manchester Orchestra has only been a proper band for a year and a half, this young quintet (with an average age of 19) has crafted an album that sounds more aware and traveled than many of its more aged peers. Led by singer / songwriter / guitarist Andy Hull, Manchester Orchestra's debut LP, I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child , is a statement cinematic in scope - a series of emotional vignettes that delicately unravel over the course of an elegantly conceived musical arc that recalls both murky southern mysticism and the id borne bombast of the Pacific Northwest. Driven by lyrics that are insightful, spiritual and impressionistic, I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child is a litany of intimate details presented in widescreen. Just as the pointillist paintings of Georges Pierre Seurat or the films of Robert Altman lead our attention to the fine details, Manchester Orchestra also find inspiration in the intimate; but it is when we are able to gain some distance we begin to see the bigger picture and wonder where our experience fits in.
Manchester Orchestra's beginnings lie in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia where during Hull's junior year in high school, his talent as a songwriter was garnering the attention of fans and industry types alike.

The Ganges River story

The Ganges River

The Ganges River story
Winding 1,560 miles across northern India, from the Himalaya Mountains to the Indian Ocean, the Ganges River is not a sacred place: it is a sacred entity. Known as Ganga Ma—Mother Ganges—the river is revered as a goddess whose purity cleanses the sins of the faithful and aids the dead on their path toward heaven. But while her spiritual purity has remained unchallenged for millennia, her physical purity has deteriorated as India’s booming population imposes an ever-growing burden upon her. The river is now sick with the pollution of human and industrial waste, and water-borne illness is a terrible factor of Indian life. But the threat posed by this pollution isn’t just a matter of health—it’s a matter of faith. Veer Badra Mishra, a Hindu priest and civil engineer who has worked for decades to combat pollution in the Ganges, describes the importance of protecting this sacred river: “There is a saying that the Ganges grants us salvation. This culture will end if the people stop going to the river, and if the culture dies the tradition dies, and the faith dies.”

Elton John**-Philadelphia Freedom Lyrics

Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom Lyrics

Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom Lyrics
I used to be a rolling stone
You know if the cause was right
I'd leave to find the answer on the road
I used to be a heart beating for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say the more my work gets done
Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I've waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee-high to a man
Yeah gave me peace of mind my daddy never had
Oh Philadelphia freedom shine on me, I love you
Shine a light through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine a light shine a light
Shine a light won't you shine a light
Philadelphia freedom I love you, yes I do
If you choose to you can live your life alone
Some people choose the city
Some others choose the good old family home
I like living easy without family ties
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

Me and Mrs. Jones

Me and Mrs. Jones -
we've got a thing going on.
We both know that it's wrong,
but it's much too strong
to let it go now.
We meet every day
at the same café
6:30 I know - I know she'll be there.
Holding hands - making all kinds of plans
while the jukebox play our favourite song.
Me and Mrs. Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones
we've got a thing going on.
We both know that it's wrong,
but it's much too strong
to let it go now.
We've gotta be extra careful
That we don't build our hopes up too high.
'Cause she's got her own obligations
and so – and so do I...
Me and Mrs. Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones
we've got a thing going on.
We both know that it's wrong,
but it's much too strong
to let it go now.
Well it's time for us to be leaving
It hurts so much - it hurts so much inside
Now she'll go her way
And I'll go mine.
Tomorrow we'll meet the same place – the same time.
Me and Mrs. Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones – Mrs. Jones
we've got a thing going on.
We've gotta be extra careful.
We can't afford to build our hopes up too high.
I wanna meet,
and talk with you,
at the same place,
the same café,
the same time
And we're gonna hold hands like we used to
We're gonna talk it over, talk it over
We know, they know, and you know and I know that it was wrong
But I'll make it strong...
We've gotta let 'em know now
We've got a thing going on...
...thing going on

Luciano Pavarotti

Luciano Pavarotti
Luciano Pavarotti was a giant in the world of opera and classical music. His international fame helped these forms of music reach a much wider and diverse audience than ever before. Even people who've never listened to a single aria, let alone sat through an entire opera, recognize the tenor's name and famous bearded face.
Pavarotti's recordings, which include collections of arias and recitals, anthologies of Italian songs and performances with the other two tenors -- Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras -- have sold in the tens of millions. He also made the occasional television appearance, whether in performance from New York's famed Metropolitan Opera House, or as a guest on talk shows. Pavarotti even tried his hand at acting in the movies, playing a famous tenor in 1982's Yes, Giorgio.

The Sun's Russell Berman has the story on the debate here.

I missed the debate tonight, on the plane to Des Moines, Iowa, to follow the first days of the Thompson campaign. I'll be checking back in tomorrow with dispatches from the road.

Fred Thompson For President?

Fred Thompson For President?Fred Thompson For President?

Republicans face a paradox coming into 2008. Our strongest candidates, polling-wise, are men that don't always represent the core values of the Republican Party. Republicans need to be careful, because spending too much time looking for the perfect candidate might distract us from finding a good one. Democrats who voted for Ralph Nader in 2000 found that out the hard way. That being said, the idea of former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson running for president is appealing on many levels. First off, he is not a career politician and has lived a full and succesfull life as a lawyer, politician, and actor. The comparisons to Reagan are obvious (though Thompson probably is a much better actor). I've done some quick research (i.e. Wikipedia) and here are his stats:

- Assistant US Attorney, 1969-1972

- Campaign Manager for Howard Baker, 1972

- Co-Cheif Council for Senate Watergate Committee, 1973-1974

- Toppled Tennesse Gov. Roy Blanton by exposing his corruption of selling pardons, 1977

- Actor in such movies as "Cape Fear," "In The Line of Fire," & "Hunt For Red October"

- Elected United States senator from Tennessee, filling the term of Vice-President Al Gore by defeating six-term Rep. Jim Cooper, 1994

- Re-elected to US Senate, defeating attorney Houston Gordon, 1996

- Chairman, Senate Committe on Governmental Affairs

- National Co-Chairman, John McCain For President 2000

- Actor, playing D.A. Arthur Branch on the NBC hit "Law & Order," 2002-present

- Unofficial shepard of the nomination of Judge John Roberts to the US Supreme Court

Pretty ecclectic, one that I think can resonate with America. His acting career gives him automatic name recognition, his political career gives him knowledge of power at its highest, and his career as an attorney gives him credibility as a professional. It seems his candidacy is being unofficially explored by a cadre of Tennessee Republicans past and present lead by ex-Senate Howard Baker (perhaps looking to become secretary of state), Rep. Zach Wamp, and state GOP Chairman Bob Davis. I would not be suprised if Lamar Alexander and Bill Frist weren't lurking somewhere behind this as well.

Tumbleweed Tiny House Company

Tumbleweed Tiny House Company
The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company was started by Jay Schafer, after he decided to inhabit just 100 square feet. He wanted a house with a low environmental impact, and he didn't want to maintain a lot of unused space. He calls his methodology "subtractive design" and he has lectured on the subject around the country. All ten of the buildings his company sells are less than 500 square feet, including the one that he currently lives in, which is 70 square feet. The biggest is "The Bungalow" at 500 square feet and the smallest is the "Elemeno House," which is 50 square feet and is based on Buddhist story of Hojoki which translates to "The 10 Foot Square Hut."
All of the houses are finely crafted and designed to be used as a home or a weekend escape or as a garden hut. Prices run from $15,000 to $40,000. A few are within the legal limits for travel on U.S. roadways and come on wheels, so you can take them anywhere you want.

With Hughes at the controls, the Flying Boat achieved a top speed of 80 mph, lifted 70 feet off the water, and flew a mile in less than a minute before making a perfect landing. The plane was then towed to a Terminal Island dry-dock, cocooned inside a giant hangar, and never seen again by the public during Hughes’ lifetime. Hughes’ Summa Corporation spent close to a million dollars a year for the lease and maintenance. After his death, the Flying Boat was put on exhibit in Long Beach Harbour beside the Queen Mary; it has since been moved to McMinnville, Ore., for display in an aircraft museum.

"It was as if he was missing the gene for corporate success," write Bartlett and Steele in their biography of Hughes. In 1948, he bought a controlling interest in RKO Radio Pictures, which he almost brought to ruin with his aberrant management style. He did much the same with Trans World Airlines (TWA), whose controlling interest he bought in 1939. Although he did much to transform TWA into a major international carrier, his secretive ways and quixotic decisions nearly plunged the airline into bankruptcy. In 1966 he was forced to sell his TWA shares after losing a lawsuit that charged him with illegally using the airline to finance other investments. The sale netted Hughes over half a billion dollars. To many, it seemed more like a victory than a defeat.

That same year, 1966, Hughes moved into the Desert Inn Hotel in Las Vegas, which he proceeded to buy (rather than be evicted), along with four other Las Vegas casinos, a radio station, and other Nevada properties. He hired an ex-FBI agent, Robert Maheu, to protect his privacy and keep him out of court, even when his own legal interests were at stake. He had become "the hermit gambling entrepreneur of Las Vegas."

Even before moving to Nevada, while he was living at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Hughes had exhibited alarming behaviour. In 1958, he apparently suffered a second mental breakdown, the first having occurred in 1944. Of his days at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Bartlett and Steele write: "Hughes spent almost all his time sitting naked in [his white leather chair] in the center of the living room – an area he called the ‘germ free zone’ – his long legs stretched out on the matching ottoman facing a movie screen, watching one motion picture after another." The same pattern was repeated in Las Vegas, made worse by a drug habit that included both codeine and Valium. (The codeine had first been prescribed to alleviate pain from injuries incurred in the XF-11 plane crash years earlier.)

Although Hughes managed to attend to business and had many periods of lucidity (he held a telephone conference call with reporters in 1972 to repudiate a book by Clifford Irving purporting to be Hughes’ taped reminiscences), his physical health had turned precarious. A doctor who examined him in 1973 likened his condition to prisoners he had seen in Japanese prison camps during World War II. That same year, ironically, Hughes was inducted into the Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio. He was represented by a member of his 1938 around-the-world flight crew. One of the inductees defended Hughes, calling him "a modest, retiring, lonely genius, often misunderstood, sometimes misrepresented and libeled by malicious associates and greedy little men."

In the final chapter of his life, Hughes left Las Vegas for the Bahamas where he stayed until he moved to Mexico, reportedly to have greater access to codeine.

(X-rays taken during the Hughes autopsy show fragments of hypodermic needles broken off in his arms.) He died of apparent heart failure on an airplane carrying him from Acapulco to a hospital in Houston.

"Such was the mystery and power surrounding his life that when he was pronounced dead on arrival at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, on April 5, 1976, his fingerprints were lifted by a technician from the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office and forwarded to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington," write Bartlett and Steele. "Secretary of the Treasury William E. Simon, for federal tax purposes, wanted to be sure that the dead man was indeed Howard Hughes. After comparing the fingerprints with those taken from Hughes in 1942, the FBI confirmed the identity." He had not been seen publicly or photographed for 20 years.

Howard Hughes’ greatest legacy to Southern California is the family of Hughes companies founded during his lifetime. These include Hughes Aircraft Co. (1935) and Hughes Space and Communications Co. (1961), a unit of Hughes Electronics Corp. Based in Westchester, Calif., Hughes Space and Communications is the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial satellites, the designer and builder of the world’s first synchronous communications satellite, Syncom, and the producer of nearly 40% of the satellites now in commercial service. Hughes Electronics is owned by General Motors. Hughes Aircraft merged with Raytheon Company in 1998 and is now called Raytheon Systems Co. Prior to the merger, Hughes Aircraft was a world leader in high technology systems for scientific, military and global applications.

All the technological prowess of these Hughes companies would almost certainly have pleased their founder, who always had a passion for building things.

It is possible the Howard Hughes suffered from ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). He certainly suffered from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) which is a common co-morbidity to ADHD.

Mesothelioma attorney utah

Mesothelioma Cancer Attorney in Utah

During a mesothelioma lawsuit, a Utah mesothelioma attorney may at some point recommend consolidating your case with other cases to create a class action lawsuit. When there is a spike in the amount of mesothelioma cases stemming from the same area, this is typically an indicator that there is a common denominator company or companies that have exposed a vast number of people to the asbestos which causes the disease. Companies which have been repeatedly sued are also more likely to settle in the event of a class action lawsuit than in individual lawsuits. Judgments can be appealed while settlements are simply agreed to and then paid. This is often a very intelligent route for those with limited time. However, if you disagree with becoming part of a class action lawsuit, your lawyer has an obligation to represent you individually. If you are receiving excessive pressure to join a class action lawsuit, at the very least get a second opinion to help determine if your lawyer is recommending something that is truly in your best interest or is recommending something that may be in their best interest. A second opinion can often clear that up. A Utah mesothelioma attorney who feels confident in their decision will be able to give you the legal and logical reasons behind their opinion.

Utah mesothelioma attorneys have considered numerous factors for the increase in mesothelioma cases. Mining, the automotive industry, construction, abatement, and other high risk industries have been aware of the significant risks associated with asbestos for decades. This information is not new and the actions that the companies should have taken are not novel. What is new and novel is the vast amount of victims who are willing to stand up for their rights. The average American worker is fed up with being taken advantage of by their place of employment. Outsourcing, downsizing, and foreign exchange have brought the American worker to a new degree of self reliance. Long gone are the days of family companies and company long term benefits. For years of faithful service American workers are being handed a watch or some luggage to accompany their deadly, debilitating disease. There is no reason to allow this to happen, and victims of mesothelioma and their families should immediately contact one of our mesothelioma cancer attorneys in Utah to determine exactly what rights they have regarding their mesothelioma diagnosis.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin 2005
Forty-year-old Andy Stitzer has done quite a few things in his life. But there's just one little thing he hasn't quite gotten around to doing yet--something most people have done by this age. Done a lot. Andy's never, ever, ever. The 40-Year-Old Virgin 2005
