Hurricane Humberto closes schools, colleges in SW La.
Schools and colleges in at least two Louisiana parishes are closed today as Hurricane Humberto (oom-BEHR'-toh) crashed ashore in southeast Texas and moved east, dumping 5 to 10 inches of rain in southwest Louisiana.
Roger Erickson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Lake Charles, says the storm moved into Louisiana between 6 and 7 a.m. and sped up a bit, moving about 12 miles an hour with winds averaging 50 miles an hour. He says winds hit 80 miles an hour in isolated spots in Calcasieu and Beauregard parishes.
The rain -- which extends as far east as Baton Rouge -- hasn't caused any significant flooding, but the storm did knock down trees and cause power failures.
